What Is Anthropic?

Anthropic is the AI safety company behind Claude. Here's what it does, why it was founded, and what makes Claude different from other AI models.

Anthropic is an AI safety company and the maker of Claude. It sits alongside OpenAI as one of the two leading frontier AI labs — the companies building the most capable general-purpose AI systems.

What distinguishes Anthropic from other AI companies is its explicit safety focus. The founders left OpenAI specifically over disagreements about how to develop powerful AI responsibly. That founding philosophy shapes everything from how Claude is trained to what it will and will not do.

What Anthropic Makes

Claude — Anthropic's family of large language models. Available via claude.ai (consumer interface) and the Anthropic API (for developers and businesses). The primary commercial product.

Claude.ai — the consumer chat interface, equivalent to ChatGPT. Free and Pro tiers. Widely used for writing, analysis, coding assistance, and research.

Anthropic API — developer access to Claude models for building applications and integrations. Used by thousands of businesses to embed AI into products and workflows.

Claude for Enterprise — enterprise version with admin controls, security features, and usage management.

Claude's Strengths

Long context window — Claude supports context windows up to 200,000 tokens (roughly 150,000 words). This makes it exceptionally useful for analysing long documents, legal contracts, research papers, or entire codebases in a single prompt.

Instruction following — Claude is widely regarded as the most consistent at following precise, nuanced instructions without improvising or ignoring constraints. For production applications where predictable behaviour matters, this is a significant advantage.

Writing quality — Claude's prose is generally considered more natural and less AI-sounding than competing models. Useful for document drafting, client communication, and content tasks.

Safety and refusals — Claude has strong safety constraints, which can occasionally mean it is more cautious than GPT-4o in edge cases. For most business use cases this is not a limiting factor.

Why It Matters for Businesses

If you are building an AI application or deploying AI in workflows, Anthropic and OpenAI represent the two primary choices for which underlying model to use. The decision usually comes down to:

  • Choose Claude for long-document tasks, precise instruction-following, agentic workflows, and situations where consistency matters.
  • Choose GPT-4o for broader integrations, multimodal inputs, or when ecosystem reach is the priority.

Both are excellent. Most advanced implementations evaluate both on their specific use case before committing.

Common questions

What is Anthropic?

Anthropic is an AI safety company founded in 2021. It builds large language models and AI systems with a focus on safety, interpretability, and reliability. Its primary product is Claude — a family of AI models available via API and through claude.ai. Anthropic is one of the two leading frontier AI labs alongside OpenAI, and is backed by Google, Amazon, and Spark Capital.

Who founded Anthropic?

Anthropic was founded by Dario Amodei (CEO) and Daniela Amodei (President), along with several other former OpenAI researchers including Tom Brown and Chris Olah. The founders left OpenAI in 2021 over concerns about the direction of AI safety practices at the company. Anthropic's mission is explicitly safety-focused — it describes itself as an 'AI safety company' that also makes AI products.

What is Claude and how does it differ from ChatGPT?

Claude is Anthropic's AI model, similar in function to ChatGPT but built with different design priorities. Claude is widely regarded as superior for long-document processing (it supports very large context windows), precise instruction-following, and tasks where consistent, predictable behaviour matters. It is also considered to have a more natural, nuanced writing style. ChatGPT has a larger integration ecosystem and better multimodal support.

What are the different Claude models?

Claude is available in three tiers: Claude Haiku (fast and cheap, best for high-volume tasks), Claude Sonnet (balanced performance and cost, best for most production use cases), and Claude Opus (most capable, best for the hardest tasks). The current generation is Claude 3.5/4 — Anthropic updates models regularly and the specific versions change, but the three-tier structure (Haiku/Sonnet/Opus) stays consistent.

Is Anthropic publicly traded?

No. As of 2026, Anthropic is a private company. It has raised several billion dollars in funding from Amazon, Google, and venture capital firms. Amazon Web Services has a deep partnership with Anthropic — Claude models are available via AWS Bedrock, and Anthropic uses AWS infrastructure. There is no confirmed IPO date.
